What is an Electric Arc Furnace?

What is an electric arc furnace?

The electric arc furnace is widely used in metal melting and is a furnace type that melts metal by striking an electric arc at high temperature. Preferred above all in steel production and metal recycling, these furnaces stand out for the high efficiency, flexibility and energy savings they deliver.

How does an electric arc furnace work?

  1. Scrap charging: the furnace is usually charged with scrap metal, pig iron or direct reduced iron (DRI). Some processes also add limestone and other additives.

  2. Formation of the electric arc: graphite electrodes carrying a high-voltage current strike an electric arc to the charge. This arc produces the extremely high temperature that melts the metal (about 5000°C).

  3. Melting: the heat radiated by the electric arc melts the metal mass and brings it to a homogeneous liquid.

  4. Chemical refining: the chemical composition of the molten metal is brought to the optimum level. Unwanted elements such as sulfur and phosphorus are removed.

  5. Slag removal: the slag formed on the molten metal is taken out of the furnace to carry away unwanted oxides and foreign matter.

  6. Tapping: the liquid steel obtained is transferred to ladle furnaces, where the final treatments are completed and casting takes place.

Advantages of the electric arc furnace

Recycling friendly: it offers an environmentally friendly production process that reuses scrap metal.
Energy efficiency: it delivers 55% lower energy consumption than traditional methods.
Flexibility: it has the capacity to process metal compositions of different kinds.
Fast production: a large quantity (400 metric tons) of liquid metal in a short time (90 min) is possible.
Lower carbon emissions: it produces lower CO₂ emissions than traditional blast furnaces.

Where are electric arc furnaces used?

🔹 Steel production: melting recycled scrap steel and producing new steel.
🔹 Metal recycling: reprocessing waste metal and returning it to use.
🔹 Production of special alloys: production of stainless steel, cast iron and other special metals.

Electric arc furnaces are an indispensable technology for sustainable and economical steel production and one of the most important components of the modern metal industry today.
