What is a Heterogeneous Mixture?
Heterogeneous mixtures are defined as mixtures in which the different phases they contain (solid, liquid, or gas) can be told apart with the naked eye or with optical instruments. These phases are substances that have not mixed completely with one another and that keep their own chemical properties. Unlike homogeneous mixtures, heterogeneous mixtures do not have the same composition and density at every point.

Construction materials:

Concrete: Concrete is a heterogeneous mixture of different solid phases such as cement, sand, water, and aggregate. These phases are mixed to form a sound and durable building material.

Asphalt: Asphalt is a heterogeneous mixture of different solid phases such as bitumen, sand, and aggregate. These phases are mixed to form a surfacing material used for roads and pavements.
Mining:

Ore: Ore is a heterogeneous mixture of valuable minerals together with rock and other minerals. Ore is processed to extract the metals.

Sand and gravel: Sand and gravel are heterogeneous mixtures containing grains of sand and pieces of rock in different sizes and shapes. These materials are used in construction and in concrete production.

Catalysts: Catalysts are heterogeneous mixtures used to raise the rate and the efficiency of chemical reactions. They generally consist of a support carrying an active metal or metal oxide. Platinum and nickel catalysts, for example, are used in ammonia synthesis and in hydrogenation reactions.

Separating heterogeneous mixtures
Heterogeneous mixtures consist of different phases and can be told apart with the naked eye. These phases are substances that have not mixed completely with one another and that keep their own chemical properties. Several methods can be used to separate heterogeneous mixtures. The method is chosen according to the size, the density, and the chemical properties of the components of the mixture.
Methods for separating heterogeneous mixtures:
1. Sieving: Used to separate solid particles of different sizes. Sieving is carried out with a perforated tool called a sieve. The size of the sieve openings is chosen according to the size of the particles to be separated.
2. Filtration: Used to separate solid particles from a liquid. Filtration is carried out with a porous material such as filter paper or cloth. The pore size of the filter material must be smaller than the size of the particles to be separated.
3. Centrifugation: Used to separate solid particles of different densities from a liquid. Centrifugation is carried out with a device called a centrifuge. The centrifuge turns at high speed and exposes the mixture to centrifugal force. This force drives the denser particles to the bottom of the tube and the less dense particles to the top of the liquid.
4. Evaporation: Used to obtain the solid residue by evaporating the liquid. Evaporation can be done by heating or by applying vacuum.
5. Distillation: Used to separate liquids with different boiling points. Distillation is carried out with a device called a still. In the still the mixture is heated, and each liquid evaporates once it reaches its own boiling point and is condensed back into liquid.
6. Dialysis: Used to separate substances according to their molecular size. Dialysis is carried out with a semipermeable membrane. The semipermeable membrane lets small molecules through while holding back large ones.
7. Flotation: Used to separate solids within a liquid according to their density. The solid with the lower density floats on the surface of the liquid, while the denser solid sinks to the bottom.
Heterogeneous mixtures by concentration
Heterogeneous mixtures consist of different phases and can be told apart with the naked eye. These phases are substances that have not mixed completely with one another and that keep their own chemical properties. Heterogeneous mixtures fall into two categories according to their concentration:
1. Suspensions: Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures in which solid particles are dispersed in a liquid medium. A suspension forms when the particles are small enough and are held afloat in the liquid. In suspensions the concentration of the solid phase is generally low or moderate.

2. Emulsions: Emulsions are heterogeneous mixtures in which one liquid phase is dispersed in another liquid phase. An emulsion forms when the particles are small enough and are emulsified in the liquid. In emulsions the concentration of the liquid phases can vary.
