What Are Polyester Production Facilities?

Polyester production facilities are complex industrial sites designed to convert chemical raw materials into synthetic fiber, plastic sheet, granules, and other polyester products. These facilities play a key part in the production of the polyester goods used in textiles, automotive, construction, packaging, and many further sectors.

Process Stages:

  1. Raw Material Preparation: Raw materials such as ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid are weighed and mixed precisely at the intended purity and ratios.

  2. Polycondensation: The mixed raw materials enter a controlled chemical reaction under high temperature and pressure and form the polyester polymer chain. This reaction is carried out in specially designed reactors.

  3. Melting: The polyester polymer that forms is melted and brought to a viscous liquid state. Heating and mixing systems are used for this operation to obtain a homogeneous melt and the intended viscosity.

  4. Forming: The molten polyester is poured into molds or sent to extrusion lines to produce plastic sheets or granules, and it is drawn into yarn. The molds give the product its intended size and shape precisely, while the extrusion lines provide continuous and homogeneous production.

  5. Cooling and Solidification: The formed polyester products are put through a controlled cooling operation and solidify. This operation lets the product obtain its intended mechanical properties and dimensional stability.

  6. Finishing Operations: The solidified polyester products are dried, cut, and packaged. At this stage the quality and conformity of the products are checked meticulously.

Environmental Impact:

Polyester production facilities must be operated meticulously in order to minimize their environmental impact. To that end, various measures are taken to prevent air and water pollution, waste gases are treated, and production waste is recycled.

  • Packaging and Bottling:

Polyester is often preferred for PET bottles and for the film strips used in packaging. Its light weight, durability, and barrier properties keep foods fresh for a long time and reduce packaging waste.

  • Photography and Imaging:

The polyester used in photographic film makes it possible to obtain high-resolution, sharp images.

  • Composite Materials:

An important component in the production of glass-reinforced (fiberglass) and other composite materials, polyester is critically important in fields such as automotive, aviation, and construction thanks to its light weight and durability.

  • Electronics and Electrical:

The polyester used in LCD screens, holograms, and filters contributes to the clarity of the image and the accuracy of the colors. It is also preferred in products such as dielectric film for capacitors, insulating film for wires, and insulating tape.

  • Carpet Industry:

Polyester fibers give carpets advantages such as durability, stain resistance, and color fastness. Carpets therefore keep their good appearance for a long time and are cleaned easily.

  • Medical Applications:

Polyester is also preferred in the medical textile products used as sutures. Its suitability for sterilization and its friendliness to tissue make it a reliable material in medical applications.
